The application is somewhat barebones but has some interesting functionality.

Starting and stopping a recording is simple, and each voice recording is assigned date, time, and length.  Once the recording is done, you can assign a name, an icon to group recordings together, and one of three priority levels.  iDicto also allows you to choose from one of three recording quality levels, and, based on device capacity, record for an unlimited time.  Another nice feature is that you can pause and restart in the middle of your recording.  And during playback, it also allows you to pause and rewind.  In addition, iDicto supports ear plugs and an external microphone.

Synchronization is an integrated part of the app.  As is the case with other sync implementations, their sync is accomplished via bonjour.  The problem with this approach is that, while it works, it is more than a bit inconvenient and requires that the iPhone and computer are on the same network.

All of this makes iDicto a good choice for an iPhone dictation app.  I have to point out though that Dan seems to appreciate Note2Self as the standard in this category of app, so it would probably be reasonable to take a look at both before deciding which one makes more sense to you.

Quick Take

Value:  High (while temporarily free)
Would I Buy Again: Maybe
Learning Curve: Low
Who is it for: Someone who wants a basic but good dictation app
What I like: Price, easy to use, limited features but still feels complete
What I Don’t: Local WiFi-only sync

Final Statement:  If you need a basic but good dictation app for free, iDicto is a good choice.  If you want more features and are willing to pay a few dollars we recommend Note2Self.
