The app store is filled with running apps that have attempted to capitalize on the success of Canabalt. Well You can stop looking for the next great running app. Inspector Gadget Mad Dash by XMG Studios is where to go to not only get your jumping, obstacle avoidance fix, but for those of us that grew up watching the famous trenchcoated cyborg, it is a real trip down memory lane.

Mad Dash is, in essence, a running game that throw a series of different styles at you in a random sequence. The first is the basic run/jump across tops of buildings while gathering coins and avoiding bananas and birds. The second comes in the form of graphing hook sections where you must tap to send your arm up and grab the hook, swinging into the next jump. You will also have mini-challenges like the on coming trains, and the occasional attack by Dr. Claw where you must avoid bombs that he drops. Just when you think it have seen it all, you are then presented with sections of fans that you must float above while avoiding the ceiling made of electricity.

The controls are responsive and the graphics are rich and vibrant. The music is the cartoon’s theme which is far too catchy for it’s own good. Mad Dash also has a large number of unlockables that can be purchased with the coins you collect in the game, or with coins purchased by in-app purchases. There are ten full episodes of Inspector Gadget that can be streamed to your iPhone, a set of sounds boards, and even a ringtone.

This extra content help keep your motivated to play more. I did find it hard to make longer runs as there is no way to slow down except dying, and many jumps are virtually impossible once you are up to a good speed. So if you like run/jumping games, and especially if you are a fan of the show, I definitely recommend you pay the buck and get into this nice casual game.

We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
