Can you tell a planet from a star? Where is the Big Dipper constellation? If you download the Star Walk app, your mobile device can become your personal guide to the heavens. Additionally, you can use the app to look at current conditions, or you can look far into the future if you want.

The Star Walk app provides users with many handy features for exploring and mastering the night sky. The onboard compass allows the “Star Spotter” feature to be activated by simply tilting the device, then the user can move their iPod Touch or iPhone in any direction and the interface will display the stars above. The display can point out stars, planets, constellations, and more. Simply tapping any item gives the app user the full details about it.

By tapping on the clock icon, the user can manually adjust the display to a specific time and date, even dates from the past. There is a helpful moon phase option that allows the user to view the various phases of the moon in the coming days, weeks, months or years, and this applies to the planets as well. When the device is connected to the Internet there is a Wikipedia links option for most items too.

There are several astronomy apps, such as Pocket Universe or SkyVoyager, but the Star Walk app uses the compass feature and GPS to give specific details about the exact location of the individual. It works with iPod Touch and iPhone devices.

The app costs $4.99 and works with English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish languages.

If you want to explore the night sky, this is a great app for the job.
