Although many computers nowadays come with a built-in webcam, my computer, for reasons unknown, didn’t. As such, $4.99 felt like a small price to pay to bring bring my laptop into the 21st century.

To use iWebcamera, you need to have access to a Wifi network and also download the iWebcamera program for whatever computer you want to use it on. Once you’re set up, your computer should detect the app via the WiFi network, and accept it as a legitimate webcam!

My main purpose was to use iWebcamera with Skype and, after some firewall tweaking, it rose to the task admirably. If you’re using a laptop, you can conveniently prop the iPhone up between your keyboard and screen. The real deal-breaker about iWebcamera however, is that it’s wireless, so you have the kind of flexibility to do things with it that you can’t do with a normal webcam; whether it’s to show off your surroundings or the intimate parts of your body, iWebcamera lets you do it.

iWebcamera features several options for you to tweak at your convenience. If you’re experiencing a lag or a dodgy connection, you can turn down the video resolution. Other features include the mysterious YouBlue Effect, which for some reason swaps red and blue colours around, and the option to switch a crosshair on and off – again, I don’t understand this feature unless you’re fantasising of shooting whoever you’re talking to, but I’m sure it has its benefits.

I’ve experienced a couple of minor performance niggles with iWebcamera, but for the most part they turned out to be related to firewall settings, which are worth amending before you start using this app. Its wireless capability makes it an app that in some ways trumps having a stationary webcam which will end up looking old and cumbersome next to your slick iPhone/webcam hybrid.

Quick Take

Value:High

Would I Buy Again:Yes

Learning Curve:Low-Medium

Who Is It For:People who thinks webcams are cumbersome pieces of kit, or people who don't own a webcam

What I Like:Wireless webcam action!

What I Don't Like:Need to play around with firewall settings to get it working well

Final Statement:A very useful app that effectively gives you the freedom of a wireless webcam. The voyeuristic possibilities are endless...
