Kami Retro seems to be trying to hit all the marks when it comes to successful retro games. If you don’t believe me (apart from retro being in the name), lets run down the check list. Retro graphics; check, this game looks like it came right off a Nintendo 64. Chip-tune sound track; check. Gameplay mechanics taken from classic games; check. It seems that everything here is exactly what the retro gamer is looking for.

Kami Retro is basically a path finding game similar to Lemmings, (without the gratuitous sacrificing of lemmings) and also like a recent iOS favorite; Spirits. You much help each little walker get from the green portal to the red door without any of them meeting their untimely demise. To accomplish this you must swipe to make them jump and change direction, while each level gives you a series of tools to help them like a fan or trampoline. It isn’t enough to just get them all there safely. You must also try and collect the stars that are scattered around the level. The game gives you five themed worlds with more than sixty levels. There are also leaderboards and achievements that tie into Game Center.

What makes this game so much fun is the environment. Each level has a jazzy tune and everything on in the level is dancing away. The game can get chaotic when you have more than one runner out at a time so it is best to move them in quickly. The difficulty of this game is not so much in completing the levels, they are very basic, but in doing it as quickly as possible. You score points for everything from the number of people that survive, to the number of stars.

With beautiful graphics, a bumping soundtrack, and dancing piranha plants, you can’t help but be drawn into this game. I would like to see levels in the future where you are forced to control more than on runner at a time. This would increase the difficulty of a relatively tame game. While retro games may be the in thing, I don’t think this game’s retro elements are what attract people to the game. It is a solid puzzle game that could become a big hit if Gamevil continues to develop it. Kami Retro is currently $.99 in the app store so give it a try.

We rate this app 3.5 out of 5 stars.
