The Karate Kid is a free game app being released in conjunction with the upcoming movie of the same name starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.  In itself, the movie is a remake of a popular 80’s flick, but let’s not hold that against it.

The game itself consists of five "mini-games" each of which is based on a segment of the movie.  In the first game called "Patience", the user must catch flies in a pair of chopsticks.  In the second, "Courage", the user must split a board of wood with his/her hand.  In the third, "Endurance", the player has to use a combination of tilt, tap and swipe combinations to move a wooden pole.  In "Perseverance", the user has to walk across a pond holding two buckets of water on his/her shoulders.  In the final game "Will", the user has to tilt the device to follow the body movements of a snake.

While the individual games themselves are not complicated, the app itself is pretty impressive in terms of graphics and animation.  It also has my favorite feature of being able to play music from the Audio Library while playing the game.  The instructions for each game are also very clear and can be access at any point during play.

The game isn’t perfect and it’s about as likely to teach you about the martial arts as "Street Fighter IV", but it’s tough to argue with free.  My only complaint is that the game doesn’t involve fighting the Cobra Kai.

Quick Take

Value:Medium-High.

Would I Buy Again:For free? Sure.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Fans of the movie and freeloaders (that is, free downloaders).

What I Like:Good graphics, animation and instructions.

What I Don't Like:Where's the Cobra Kai?

Final Statement:A good download even if it doesn't teach you "paint the fence".
