User Rating:The Last Ace of Space, a cartoonish side-scrolling game where you have to, well, run.
Players take control of the titular Last Ace, who in my opinion looks like a mouse in tights. Armed with a pig and a gun, our hero has to escape the clutches of a gigantic slime monster.
Played in landscape mode, the game features simplistic controls. Everything you need to move is located at the base of the screen. Two round buttons on the left and right allow you to jump, and swiping your finger across the bottom half across the screen allows for the mouse to slide under enemies. Occasionally, you’ll get the flying enemy that you’ll either have to flick away, or tap to shoot at. Touching an enemy will bring the slime monster closer to you, and the game is over when it eats you. Collect beans along to way to power up your pig sidekick, allowing you a short burst of speed by riding on the pig’s flatulence.
The game could do with much more improvements. When the player is required to shoot at the flying monsters, gameplay slows down, giving it a Matrix-like effect. While I really like this extra touch, I did not like the fact that the monsters just vanish after tapping them. I was expecting laser bolts being fired from the gun, and not just enemies vanishing without a trace.
This game is almost impossible to lose. As the slime monster approaches, giant footprints appear on the screen and you can tap them to escape. Collecting 3 beans to activate the pig is rather easy too. Due to this, it makes the game fairly simple to master and difficult to lose. I would prefer if they had adjustable difficulty levels. On quite a few occasions, I stopped the game not because I lost, but because I got bored of it.
The Last Ace of Space is available for 99 cents. This is one game that you’ll be playing while you’re waiting for your bus to arrive. It isn’t something that you’ll expect to spend hours on, and you’ll get bored of it rather quickly. The game does inject humour through the use of witty mocks when your character eventually, or rather “finally”, dies.
