If you’re in your 30’s or 40’s now, you likely owned a Lite Brite as a kid. Naturally, Hasbro and EA have to take advantage of this nostalgia using the superior graphics of the games they produce and release a Lite Brite app for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Of course, being a computer program rather than a paper screen with holes punched in it, the Lite Brite game for the iPhone is a little more flexible and can do things you wouldn’t dream of in the original version, such as animation. It is possible in the application to create a work of art free-form or use one of the existing templates. You can also play a competitive version of the game in which you put the appropriate colors in the appropriates place to make a picture within the allotted time. Pictures can be saved locally or shared with services such as Facebook.
If I had any complaints about this app is that it takes a refined finger to tap the screen in just the right place to get the colored light to appear. Of course, this wouldn’t be such a big problem for actual children rather than kids-at-heart such as myself. Fortunately, pinch and zoom is an option on this app, although it would be nice if "undo" was a little more accessible. It also has my favorite feature of playing your audio library in the background.
Lite Brite has always been a great way for kids to express creativity. The iPhone version only makes it more portable. If you have or know a child with an iPod touch, this is well worth the buck. I’m just waiting for an artist with a lot of time on his/her hands to make an animated movie using only the Lite Brite app.
