"It’s all in your mind." If you’ve been terribly anxious about something at some point in your life, chances are you’ve been told by a friend or a confidant the preceding saying. It’s a statement that, along with its variations, has been spoken so many times since time immemorial that it has long been considered a cliche. But as a character in The Social Network says, "Just because something is trite doesn’t make it any less true."

There are some who roll their eyes at the idea, but there are many people who believe that more often than not it is indeed all in the mind. That if you want to get rid of a problem, you can with some effort think it away. That if you want to achieve something, you’re just as able to think it into existence.

Apparently, the people behind NASA are believers of the power of the mind, as they’ve developed techniques for training their personnel focused more on the mental than on other facets of human mechanism. The folks of LotBraining, a flourishing startup company, are also firm believers, not only of the saying in question but also of the training philosophy of NASA. Proving that it’s not one to take for granted the applications of new technology, LotBraining has taken to the iOS drawing board and fashioned a native app that brings the tried and tested mental coaching methods pioneered by NASA into the iPhone.

LotBraining Mental Training for Personal Development seeks to mirror the mental exercises used by NASA in its space exploration program on a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with an iPhone or an iPod touch. The app’s landing page shows a virtual wheel evenly divided into seven sections. Each section bears a different color and represents one of the following aspects: success, joy, relaxation, confidence, courage, health, and motivation. You can manually pick a section by dragging it radially towards the wheel pointer or randomly pick one by giving the wheel a turn. Either way, you’ll be prompted to choose between taking a test or undergoing a mental training for that aspect.

A test for an aspect consists of three situational questions, each with three choices provided as answers. Three questions may seem too few to quantify your level of, say, self-confidence or motivation, but this part of the app doesn’t claim to be an accurate gauge. Rather, it offers a rough estimate of your current performance but still asks that you answer the questions honestly.

A training session involves a short explanation of the training apropos of the chosen aspect and the significant use of a symbol. Symbols are indispensable to how we live, imprinted as they are on the human psyche, so their use in an app geared towards mental enhancement is not surprising. During training, you are to concentrate on thoughts related to the aspect on hand as you stare at a pulsating symbol for an extended period of time. If successful, you will have been subtly changed for the better.

The app also has a couple of extras thrown in. There’s a Reminders list, where you can schedule alerts for your trainings, and there’s a built-in note-taking tool within each aspect of personal development, where you can take down your positive thoughts to help you get through your day.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:If my mind (and wallet) is up to it, yeah.

Learning Curve:Low, since the app is in itself a walk-through.

Who Is It For:Anxious, weak, underachieving people who happen to own iPhones.

What I Like:The high-resolution, retina display-ready graphics.

What I Don't Like:Very few test questions.

Final Statement:If you want to boost your mental energy and improve your personality the iOS way, LotBraining is the closest to a no-brainer you will ever get.
