In conjunction with the upcoming movie, NBC Universal has released a MacGruber app for the iPhone and iPod touch with features that include a bomb defuser challenge, a sound board, the movie trailer, a mullet generator, and a countdown for the movie release date.
The first section is a bomb defusing challange, in which you have to place various items in a circuit board to stop a bomb from going off. The game is timed of course, and there is the additional challenge that you’re constantly interrupted by texts from characters such as MacGruber’s sidekick Vicki. If you fail (and you likely will), there is a video of a bomb going off.
Another section is a sound board which has quotes from the movie. I’m not sure if these are quotes from the actual movie or just lines spoken for the app since I haven’t seen the movie yet. However, most of them involve double-entendre sex or toilet humor, so they’re funny if you like that sort of thing.
The mullet generator is probably the most interesting part of the app if you ever wanted to see yourself with a mullet. It takes a photo of you from either the Photo Library or your iPhone camera and you can place the image of a mullet over it. Joy.
The app also provides photos, wallpapers and sounds from the movie in case you want to turn your iPhone into MacGruber central and impress all your friends (who could immediately get the same app since, y’know, it’s free).
Finally, the app has a text synopsis of the movie and a trailer.
In short, the app is a marketing ploy, but it is a clever marketing ploy, and there are worse ways to kill an afternoon, although not by much.
