Okay, this is a little embarrassing to admit, but someone asked me for my home number the other day and I actually had to look it up. It’s not that we changed our number recently, we didn’t. It’s not that we moved recently, did that, 5 1/2 years ago. It’s simply the fact that I almost never dial a phone number anymore. I tend to only call my wife on her cell phone and I don’t really use the home phone more than once a week, if at all.  So, you get a situation where I had to look up my own phone number.

The fact is, I really don’t have many phone numbers in my head at all. When I want to dial someone, I look up the number, tap their name, and the number is dialed. On those rare occasions when I do happen to use a landline, I always had to look up the number on my iPhone or in my Macs address book. Then, I have to read the number and type it into the landline. That won’t be the case any longer thanks to this application.

It claims that you can tap a person’s name, pull the iPhone up to the landline and it will type the number using the touch tones for the combination that would be press when dialing physically. Does it work? In my testing this morning — 100% of the time.

The application is actually rather well thought out. Once you pick a name it counts down from three so that you know when to hold the iPhone speaker to the mouthpiece on the land line.

There is, however, a fatal flaw to this application. For some reason, they did not include a way in which to search within your contacts. That means that to get to a name that begins with Z I need to scroll through hundreds of contacts first. That is not a timesaver.

The other fatal flaw with this application is this — I’m not sure why I would want to use it. If I’m going to take the time to pull out my iPhone, search for a contact, tap the screen, and hold my iPhone to my landline, I might as well either use the iPhone itself or, if need be, dial the number on the landline. Sure, the first couple times you dial using this application it’s kind of neat. But then, if you’re anything like me, it’ll be removed from your device.

Quick Take

Value: Low at $.99, even lower when the price goes up
Would I Buy Again: No
Learning Curve:  Zero
Who Is It For:  Not quite sure what would love if someone could explain to me
What I Like:  Does exactly what it claims to do
What I Don’t:  Not sure why would want to do it

Final Statement:  Need proof of concept, does exactly what it says it does but I don’t need it

Ever find yourself digging into your mobile because you need to dial a number into your work phone? Now you can dial land lines directly from your iPhone. It appears to be magic.

MagicDial Allows you to: * Keep your contacts in a single spot– on your iPhone. * Magically dial your contacts with just a touch of your iPhone. * Save Minutes by using your home or business phone more often.* Impress your Friends.

Follow the three easy steps.

1. Find the contact in MagicDial

2. Pickup a land line handset with a dial tone.

3. Press Dial on your iPhone, while holding your iPhone a few inches from the handset.

Features:* Uses your existing contacts.* Displays contacts in a flatted and more intuitive means.* Accounts for 9 and 1 prefixes.

How it works: MagicDial plays tones which a land line interprets as numbers being dialed. These tones do the dialing so you don't have to.

Limitations:* MagicDial dials land lines phones and will NOT dial cellular phones and may not work on many VOIP phones.* MagicDial instigates a real phone call on the landline. Usage charges may apply.
