User Rating:Once I had this great idea of creating a computer program that would put customizable word balloons on photographs for enjoyment. Sadly, I’m slow on the uptake as well as lazy and several apps of this concept have already been developed for the iPhone. Manga Balloon Maker is one of them.
The app is pretty simple and easy to use. You select a balloon from an array of types (including an actual balloon. How cute). While the title emphasizes manga, the balloons could be from a variety of comic book types. Once a word balloon is created and text is added to it by double-tapping the balloon. The direction of the pointer for the balloon can also be changed by double-tapping. It can then be saved to the photo library, twittered or e-mailed to someone.
That’s the good. Now here’s the bad. You can’t resize the balloons, nor can you change the color of the balloon or the text inside. That is a fundamental capability that I would have included had I created the app. I also found a bug. I set up a photo with a word balloon and prepared to e-mail it and then decided to cancel and return to the photo. There is no way to return to the photo from that without starting over. Either it’s a feature or a bug and I’m betting on the latter.
In short, Manga Balloon Maker is one of those casseroles that needs to sit in the oven a little more. Hopefully future releases will be more refined.
