You’d think that one of the biggest online names in navigation would have a tremendous app. In this instance, they’re resting on their laurels.
The application is adequate for finding a location and getting directions (for iPod Touch users, a Wi-Fi connection is required). Like its online namesake, it also lists the nearest gas stations, restaurants, hotels, etc. They have to make their money somehow for this free app.
The only real change one can make in the settings is on the icon showing your current location. Truthfully, this would be adequate if not for the fact that Google Maps does the same thing but with extras such as street-level pictures.
Another foible of the app is that, if using a Wi Fi connection, it considers your Wi Fi source to be your current location. While this would be close enough for some, it would be somewhat difficult if you were lost somewhere on foot. Presumably this is not an issue when using an iPhone with a data plan.
Sadly, like MapQuest itself, the directions are far from perfect. Sometimes you may find addresses missing or the directions given are not necessarily the most direct or least confusing route. Using it outside the U.S. may be very limited or even non-existent.
The app is simple, functional and useful on the road. It’s not the best nor far from the worst. For the price, it would be worth having it take up space on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Pros: simple, intuitive interface. Highly functional.
Cons: directions are not always accurate. Google Maps has more function.
