Marvel Vs Capcom 2 has an extremely retro feel to the iOS game, and has a  very good reason for it.  It’s a near-perfect port of the 90’s arcade game of the same name, but with the modern hardware available in iPad and iPhone

Marvel Vs Capcom 2’s graphics and style are very loud and boisterous.  It’s a simple one-on-one combat game in the style of Mortal Kombat although you can switch between three pre-chosen characters as you play.  I’m not familiar with the Capcom characters, but the Marvel designs are straight from a decade or more ago.  Although in Marvel Vs Capcom 2 they do have a bit of an anime look to them.

I did say that Marvel Vs Capcom 2 was near-perfect, but it’s not quite perfect.  The on-screen controls are awkward to use (after all, the game was originally designed for a joystick) and the initial setup can be confusing if you don’t know ahead of time that you’re supposed to pick three characters and not just one. Of course, after reading this review you are prepared for it.

Another beef I have with Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is the inability of the screen to rotate, which is quite a problem in an iPhone and worse in an iPad, because holding it “wrong” when having a case can be a pain in the wrists.  It’s stuck in landscape mode and won’t even automatically rotate 180 degrees unless you change the orientation in the options menu.

Marvel Vs Capcom 2 comes with a hyper-stylized set of graphical instructions in case the myriad of on-screen controls confuses or scares you (they can be customized in the options menu).  Also, you can play against someone else if they have a nearby iDevice with Bluetooth.

As of this writing, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is on sale for $3 to celebrate the upcoming Avengers movie and works for both iPhone and iPad.  For that price, if you were ever a fan of the Marvel characters or the original video game, I would say that it’s worth it.

Quick Take

Value:Medium-High.

Would I Buy Again:Most likely.

Learning Curve:Medium.

Who Is It For:Marvel, Capcom and/or 90's videogame enthusiasts.

What I Like:Great reproduction.

What I Don't Like:Controls could be a little more intuitive.

Final Statement:For the best of 90's mindless violence, get Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.
