Not another matching game, you might complain upon learning of the new and free iOS game called Match Trek. But give it a chance, have a go at its mechanics, and play it for a while, and you might just find yourself realizing that, indeed, Match Trek is not just another matching game. Yes, it is a matching game, but it’s one that possesses an unexpectedly delightful twist.

Match Trek transports you into the retina display-worthy but perilous world of Loki and his tribe. The well-told back-story shares that their treasures were stolen by their enemies, who, it must be said, are Orcs and bird monsters, even if they’re designed to look almost as cute as Loki and his friends. Your task is to join Loki and company in their quest across the hidden forest, into treasure caves, and beyond to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. You do this by going through a number of stages featuring matching puzzles and some surprise challenges, which get more and more difficult as you progress. Already sounds interesting, doesn’t it? But what makes Match Trek a cut above the rest in its category is that it incorporates the retrieval of the stolen treasures, the accumulation of health boosters, and the tactical use of weapons into the matching puzzles themselves.

Not only will your memory be challenged as you flip over tokens to reveal a variety of sparkling gems, reinvigorating fluids, and combat paraphernalia, which you could collect by matching any two items, but you will also need to exercise prudence in managing your resources. Hidden behind some of the tokens are the enemy monsters themselves, and once you uncover one or a group of them within a puzzle, battle commences. And at such a point is where your skills in resource management is put to the test, as you decide on whether it’s wiser to use a slingshot or a sword to obliterate an avian enemy and figure out which set of attacks will incur the least amount of damage to your health. It’s all about memory and strategy.

The first stage of Match Trek is the hidden forest, where you are given time to learn the ropes and wrap your mind around the game’s quirks. Also hidden behind several tokens are portals into treasure caves that offer bonus gems and ample chances to make chain matches, which yield special commands to be used during combat. When the first stage is complete, you can opt to explore the hidden forest again or proceed to the succeeding stages by purchasing them in-app.
