User Rating:Admittedly, I have never played Mega Man before. I hope my Mega Man virginity does not offend the Mega Man fanatics out there.
That being said, the game is extremely clever. Obviously the user gets more variety with the paid version of the application ($4.99 in the App Store). In fact, near as I can tell the free version only gets you one level. But that’s not why it’s clever.
It’s clever because in portrait mode, the game looks like a video arcade console from the 1980’s. In landscape mode, it looks like a knock-off of the Nintendo Game Boy from the 1990’s. Leave it to Capcom to know their video-gaming history.
The game itself is pretty simple and seems to pride itself on its retro graphics style. Mega Man jumps. He fires some sort of energy weapon. Little bats shaped like cannonballs come down to sap his energy. It’s pretty much what you’d expect.
Despite my admiration for the game, I think five bucks is pretty steep. For that, you better be a big Mega Man fan. Or perhaps a secret millionaire.
It’s a good game to keep the young boys who are ramped up on sugar busy for a little while without resorting to fireworks or taking baseball bats to the elderly. Sadly, my video game tastes have moved beyond such things. I’d have been more impressed if Capcom made a more modern version of the game using the iPhone’s better graphics. Such is life.
Pros: I dig the retro game consoles.
Cons: Not much to the game itself.
