Grab your goggles and strap yourself in for the flight of your life in MiniSquadron Special Edition. Fung Fung Studio’s latest iteration of the MiniSquadron Games adds eight new levels and new features like the helicopter and rapid fire. This side scrolling shooter boasts 50 unlockable airplanes and a fun cartoon style that keep players coming back for more.
The game consists of flying around in an area shooting at other planes and dodging bullets. The enemies in the game are all unlockable, so if you find a particular plane difficulty to beat, then take heart that you will be able to turn the hurt around on them when that plane becomes unlocked. Each plane has its own style, weapon, and handling adding to the game’s diversity. Players of any style will be able to find a plane they like, whether you like fast and lightly armored to slow with powerful missiles. Each level also has various flying non-enimeies that can be shot for points. These range from flying cats, to flying gymnasts.
The controls are the usual virtual control pad on the left with a firing button on the right. While maneuvering to get behind your opponent you must be careful not to fly too high, and risk stalling, or too low, and crash into the ground. The controls are responsive and easy to learn. If you find you are not able to complete a level or have to stop and take a phone call. The game saves your progress and you can pick up on the wave that you left off. If you want more of the classic endless level type of gaming MiniSquadron offers a survival mode, as well as a multiplayer version utilizing WiFi so you and your friends can battle it out one on one.
The game comes with two free levels and additional levels can be unlocked in packs of two for $.99. While it appears that the levels don’t change much, the enemies become harder and it allows you to unlock more plane to use. This game is perfect for casual gaming with a zero up front investment the player can choose to pay for increased variety or choose to move on if the game does not appeal to them. It would be interesting to see some variety in the game play but perhap that would bring this game out of the casual gaming realm. Irregardless, MiniSquadron: Special Edition is a definite must get game.
