I’ve been going retro quite a bit recently in my reviews.  This is a retro app as well, but it’s from the Amiga Computer, which I never owned nor worked with.  It’s not my retro.  It’s someone else’s.

The app lets you play old style MOD files (which are kind of like MIDI files from way back when).  The files range from the melodic to the downright weird and you have to have a WiFi or data connection in order to download new stuff.  The library itself is reminiscent of the music library built into the iPod Touch or iPhone itself.

The app does let you fiddle with the music (reverb, surround, and megabass) like a mini-DJ. You can also control the volume from the app and select favorite MOD files.

There is an informational button that gives some sort of description of the file and a power button that does absolutely nothing other than give this app a retro feel.  Through the settings, you can control the length of play and switch to offline mode, among other capabilities.

The retro factor probably is a huge reason to download this app.  With all the cheap device memory available nowadays, there’s a reason that file types like MIDI and MOD aren’t really used anymore.

With that in mind, I have to give this app a pass.  It’s not a bad app,  but it’s for a very specific niche that I’m not a part of.  If you are a part of that group and have a spare two bucks, go for it.

Quick Take

Value:Low.

Would I Buy Again:Probably not.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Amiga and MOD format fans.

What I Like:Nice interface.

What I Don't Like:Not into the concept of a iPhone app for MOD files.

Final Statement:Not for me.

Read the Developer's Notes:
ModPlayer is a simple music player that plays MOD, S3M, 669, and other tracker files on your iPhone and iPod Touch. The first MOD file format was created in 1987 for use on the Amiga computer and since then has been used by computer music artists to create music well before MP3s. The historical advantages was that MOD files were small, high quality, and included their own music samples, making them similar but more flexible compared to MIDI files. This app provides:* Basic functionality for downloading MOD files from the internet or personal web server to your device through an integrated web browser. Supports extracting from ZIP files now to batch load!* Browsing the downloaded files on your device. Swipe to delete from the device.* Mod player which lets you pause and unpause, as well as scrub forwards and backwards within the song.Let me know at [email protected] if you have any questions, suggestions, comments, and feature requests!
