User Rating:Time was when most people of literary and journalistic persuasion never left their houses without making sure they’re armed with a pen and a notebook to fulfill a variety of purposes while they’re on the go. Now, with the ever evolving landscape of digital technology, these people are the same ones equipped with nothing but their trusty iPhones to aid them in jotting down important details, to-do items, marginalia, and at their most sentimental, memories.
It is chiefly this sort of people that a host of journal-based and note-taking iPhone apps are marketed towards. One of the more popular and unarguably more beautifully designed of these is Momento.
You can spend $2.99 to purchase Momento if only for its interface, and you won’t feel robbed of your hard-earned money afterwards. It bears the kind of Apple-ish sheen that has become highly regarded within and without design circles — a winning combination of color scheme, simulated texture, and all-important responsiveness. But the price doesn’t take into account the interface alone, of course, since the app is fairly packed with features that justify the existence of a much-lauded end-user experience.
Essentially a calendar slash journal of events — in-app they’re called moments — Momento lets you easily add an otherwise mental note anytime, anywhere. To your note you can attach a star rating to reflect how the present moment compares to your other moments, tags for types of events as well as tags for people and places involved, custom tags, and a photo or two (or five or eight). Everything you need and more to make your little record of a moment reasonably detailed and searchable is there.
Apart from your moments, Momento also supports integration with a number of social networks. You can, for example, associate the app with your accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare so that your tweets, status updates, and check-ins will automatically appear on your journal along with your manually entered precious moments.
Amid its predilection towards archiving online musings and brain farts, however, it’s not yet tied to a dedicated online backup facility. What it does have are options to create an export file and a full backup, both accessible through iTunes file sharing.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:Yes.
Learning Curve:The app is intuitive and learning how to operate it should be a breeze.
Who Is It For:Those keen to record accounts of events that are of little to great importance.
What I Like:Gorgeous interface. A great many metadata to accompany each moment.
What I Don't Like:No dedicated online backup available.
Final Statement:As far as journal-keeping in the age of iDevices is concerned, Momento is the way to go.
