Monkey Quest: Thunderbow sports brilliant cartoon graphics and special effects, and it’s no wonder it does since it comes to us from none other than that longstanding bastion of kids’ and kids-at-heart’s entertainment, Nickelodeon.

Monkey Quest: Thunderbow is an action-packed game that tells the story of Thunderbow, a monkey on a mission to defeat the evil cat ruler Zotan. But Thunderbow’s path toward greatness is, of course, not without obstacles. To accomplish his mission Thunderbow must pass through scorpion-infested deserts, ruins inhabited by fiery skeletons, tombs filled with mummies, and a few other perilous lands yet to be introduced in coming-soon episodes.

An episode in Monkey Quest: Thunderbow contains ten levels, with latter episodes unlocked only upon collecting a certain number of bananas in the earlier episodes. In each level Thunderbow is bent on destroying the enemies by pulling and aiming his bow toward their fortification. But instead of a boring straight arrow, what Thunderbow fires from his bow varies from a carrot to a grenade-like pineapple (or is it a pineapple-like grenade?), from a hornet that gets split into three to a exploding bat-like creature. Does the gameplay sound familiar yet?

You can argue that, much like Adult Swim’s Snoticles, Monkey Quest: Thunderbow is a sly ripoff of Angry Birds. I for one nearly dismissed it as such the first time I played the game and instantly saw the resemblance between it and the popular bird-hurling game. But Monkey Quest: Thunderbow is not without its own merits. Frankly, the brightly colored cuteness of Angry Birds can be tiring, and Monkey Quest: Thunderbow offers a more exciting alternative, with its tough-looking hero, creepy enemies, deathly environments, hard-rockin’ soundtrack, and frequent congratulatory announcements saying “Combo Blast!” and “Mass Destruction!”

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Low. If you know how to play Angry Birds, you already know how to play this.

Who Is It For:Players who have already finished all levels of Angry Birds.

What I Like:The overall design, which a sort of antithesis to that of Angry Birds. The high-intensity graphics and sountrack.

What I Don't Like:Its gameplay is copied from Angry Birds, undeniably.

Final Statement:While Monkey Quest: Thunderbow borrows heavily from Angry Birds, it stands on its own as a more intense projectile-shooting puzzler.
