Monster Trucks Nitro 2 is a 3-D side-scroller where the player controls a monster truck in a race against another monster truck rendered in ghost form. Winning a race typically entails getting nitro boosts, hence the name of the game.

There are two ways to gain nitro boosts. One is to run into nitro boosters randomly placed along the tracks, and the other is to do complete mid-air flips, which when successful result to the monster truck getting an automatic nitro boost. This all sounds pretty easy, but it actually becomes so only once the game controls are mastered.

The controls scheme is a combination of touch and tilit inputs. The speed and rectilinear direction of the monster truck is controlled by touching the slider across the bottom of the screen, with the left end reserved for reverse, the middle for idle, and the right end for full gas. On the other hand, the monster trucks’s tilts and flips are performed by tilting the device sideways. This tilting requirement feels more natural than the touch-based slider. An onscreen pair of brake and gas pedals, like those used in the first Monster Trucks Nitro, seems a more proper control method.

Winning a race seems important simply because money is involved. If victorious, the player is given a certain monetary reward, which can be used to gain entry to the latter races. And that’s apparently all the money is for. There’s no, say, an in-app to store to purchase upgrades. This might prove detrimental to the game, considering that controlling the same monster truck, however monstrous it may be to begin with or however great the graphics and sound effects are, can get old pretty quickly.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:Maybe.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Players who have a moderate need for speed and a big hunger for monster trucks.

What I Like:Tilt controls, nitro boosts, graphics and sound effects.

What I Don't Like:The brake and accelerate slider. No use for money earned other than to gain entry to succeeding races.

Final Statement:Monster Trucks Nitro 2 is a significant improvement over the original, but it still leaves much to be desired.
