MotionDrum is one of those apps whose function is somewhat lost on me.  Simply put, it’s a drum simulator that makes use of the iPhone or iPod Touch’s unique ability to track its own motion.

It is possible to customize the drum sound that the app makes when flicked in a certain direction, as well as the volume and motion sensitivity of that particular noise.  There are a myriad of choices for the sound of each flick direciton including a snare or base drum, a shout, some voice hits, electric fills, rim shots and many others.  You can also have a background hi-hat beat playing and then flicking the device around to create different drum sounds to that.

Another nice feature of the device is the ability to play iPod music in the background to your beat, so you can play along to the music.  However, it seems that once a song is started, it can’t be stopped without exiting the app and going to your iPod music library, which can be kind of annoying.

While the app is cute, due to the limitations of the device, it’s impossible to create a truly complex beat.  It’s simply the occasional drum sound made to a background beat (whether it’s a hi-hat or a song from your iPod).  If you’re obsessed with hearing beat boxes while conducting a band, then this could be your kind of app.
