When the Internet first grew to prominence, the site which most fascinated me was the website of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.  And now, you can carry the Louvre in your pocket.  For free.

One of the best aspects of the app is that it doesn’t require an Internet connection.  You can look at whatever Louvre works of art you wish wherever and whenever you’d like.  For all intents and purposes, this app is a virtual ineractive tourist brochure of the Louvre.

The initial screen is set up like the albums in your iPod Touch or iPhone library, where you can scroll across and see the album covers.  There is also a search function so you can find particular works of art.  Each piece of art you view comes with corresponding information on the history of the piece and the artist.  In some cases, there is video, technical information about the work (size, type of materials, etc.) and a map of the location of the art within the museum.

You can bookmark certain works of art (it would be neat to call that section "The Gallery", but they don’t).  There are video clips for touring around the museum.  There are maps of the palace section of the Louvre and visitor information.  Yes, it is definitely a tourist brochure.

My one complaint about the app is the inability to look at the app in portrait mode.  It only works in landscape.  Other than that, this app is as close to perfect as one can come.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Absolutely.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Art enthusiasts and anybody with an ounce of culture.

What I Like:The app setup. The concept. The price.

What I Don't Like:Lack of portrait mode.

Final Statement:A must-have on anyone's iPod Touch or iPhone.
