Believe it or not, in this age of Kindles, iPads and other increasingly handy digital book readers, people still do read paper-based books. If you belong to this dying breed of people, then you probably wouldn’t mind an app that quickly scans books you find interesting, and lets you keep their details neatly organised in one place.

MyBooks fulfils this role admirably. The app lets you scan book bar-codes, instantly bringing up all the book’s main details for you. The scanner works perfectly, and there’s no need to even press a button as it automatically detects the barcodes for you.

After you’ve scanned your desired book, you can save it to one of two lists, ‘My List’ and ‘Scan List.’ I don’t really see a difference between the two lists, but it’s nice to have a choice, right? Another useful function after scanning your book is a link to track it down on the web. This sends you to Google Books, where you’re presented with their trusty list of the best places to buy the book at the best price.

You can handily look through your lists either by book or by author, though it would be useful to be able to instantly track down authors on the internet; maybe links to their Wikipedia pages would be a good touch?

The aforementioned is a small gripe however. The interface is simple and the scanning function works flawlessly. The added function of being able to leave comments on your book finds is also a useful one; a counterpoint to the fairly trivial option of typing in how much of the book you’ve read. Surely people still use bookmarks or fold the corner of a page to keep track of that? Either way, MyBooks is a worthwhile purchase for any smartphone-wielding bookworm.
