The recent arrival of Netflix in Europe has meant that the film/TV streaming market has just got a hell of a lot more competitive. LoveFilm, which until now has dominated this market in the UK, is trembling in its boots as the US-born giant has hit the ground running over here.

As well as offering streaming on your PCs and games consoles, Netflix have wasted no time in bringing their app to the UK app store. This is essentially the same app as the one that’s been available state-side for a while now.

As a film fan, I think it’s worth owning both Lovefilm and Netflix as their libraries differ quite heavily from each other. While Netflix is more focused on quality TV shows such as Dexter, 24, South Park, and also a surprising amount of British comedy in the form of Peep Show, The Thick of It and Saxondale, among others, it doesn’t have as up-to-date a film collection as Lovefilm. With few exceptions, the films on Netflix are more nostalgia-oriented, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The Netflix app remembers your viewing habits, giving you recommendations on what to watch based on what you’ve been watching until now. If you’re a bit of a channel-hopper (does that apply to film streaming?) then you can always return to what you were watching before at the exact point that you left it.

The catch with the app is that it’s not as free as the App Store makes it out to be. After a one-month free trial, you’ll be charged the modest sum of £5.99 if you don’t cancel your account. However, considering that this account’s accessible from just about any piece of hardware with a screen, this is a very reasonable price. A must for film and TV addicts.
