My first cell phone was the (at least in the US) ambiguous Nokia 5110. With its monochrome screen and great battery life, the “candy bar” phone was known for containing one of the earliest cell phone games; Snake. While many versions of this classic game exist, Very few exist on the iOS platform, or garner much attention.

Nimblebit took this as a sign for them to intervene, and so they did with Nimble Quest. Nimble Quest is at its heart a snake clone with a fantasy dressing. Nimblebit wasn’t satisfied with the classic gameplay so their quest has a unique spin on the old productivity reducer. Instead of eating apples to grow your snake. You are an adventurer that moves around the board and picks up companions to help you fight the endless hoards of baddies. Each character is your typical archetype of fantasy and while each has their own special abilities, don’t get too comfortable with them because The constant barrage of fire and arrows will whittle down their health quickly and you will be replacing them.

Every time your kill and enemy, they spill out piles of coins to collect. Coins can be used to upgrade your adventurers and the spells that appear during the game. There is of course the option to purchase coins to grease the gears of the grind. IAPs like this don’t bother me much if they balance it enough that I feel they are not necessary. The grinding you need to improve your characters is long, but the gameplay is fun even if you don’t advance very far.

Nimble Quest is a fine example of free to play gaming. The gameplay is fun and the improvements are gradual but don’t unobtainable. If you are looking for a new distraction for your daily commute, Nimble Quest is free and a pleasant way to pass your day.
