I’m honestly not sure what to make of Offender Locator. On one hand, it would be nice to know if sex offenders are in the neighborhood so you could avoid them. On the other hand, this is just begging for an incident of vigilante justice.
The Lite version of the application is limited to viewing 3 offenders in the area and to 3 searches per day. To see more, you have to splurge $.99 on the full version. I can see why this is a popular paid app. I can think of lots of mothers who would pay $.99 to know where to never take her children.
The app itself is pretty simple. The user can either enter an address manually, use his or her current address via GPS or WiFi or use an address from his/her contacts. Once entered, the application finds all sex offenders in that vicinity. It will also show you their location on a map.
This application could not possibly be legal. Despite being ex-cons, don’t these people have rights or at least some sort of right to privacy? I can understand if the list is available by going to the police station, but having it readily available on the Internet crosses a line.
I’m not sure what to think of the content of this app, but as an application it’s pretty straight-forward and simple to use. Admittedly, it can be useful and if I were a parent I’d want this app. I just hope no tragedies come of it.
Pros: Simple to use. Very useful. Inexpensive.
Cons: Questionable morality.
