Back in the days of arcades, one of the best games were the shooting gallery style games. Each one had basically the same formula. You had a model gun attached to the cabinet, and you would have to go up against enemies as the viewport moves along a set rail. The settings and characters would change, but the games remain relatively the same. Well, the boys at Ivanovich Games have released a rails shooter by the name of Operation Wow.

The game begins by telling you that twenty-five years later the missions continue. I was not aware that this was a sequel, nor was able to find any information about any previous game, but never mind that. Let’s kick some butt in the game. Operation Wow main menu is shows an arcade cabinet that will take you to the six campaign levels. Each one pits you against an increasingly difficult stream of solders, helicopters, and tanks. The iOS gives the unique opportunity to perform multi-shots by tapping with more than on finger. You are armed with a machine gun, but you also have the ability to swipe to throw a grenade. You will also find power-ups like extra ammo, and time stopping. Avoiding hitting the innocent by standers is critical to surviving, but I didn’t really find them to be hard to miss. Once you finish a level it unlocks the next, but the level can be played and replayed in any order once they are unlocked.

Operation Wow also has an endless mode as well as a target practice and a mode called, “Meat Ninja” which is like fruit ninja but with tapping instead of swiping. The endless mode is truly a frantic experience which is was hard to last more than a minute or two before I succumb to a bloody fate. The action is fast paced and can be quite difficult on the iPhone’s small screen. I did feel that these kind of game lose a little of the charm from their arcade forefathers. the lack of actually gun prop and the limit of being able to shoot one thing at a time is missing . It feels like the game is arbitrarily harder to make up for the multitouch platform. In spite of this, I think Operation Wow is a decent game with plenty of action to keep you busy. For the $.99 it costs, it is well worth taking a look.
