Big Stone Phone Announces Website and Details On Upcoming Resident iPhone Applications!

By

On

The App Store may not be open for business until Friday but that doesn’t mean we can’t start getting more than a peak at some of the neat applications that will be available at launch.

Our friends are Stone Design and Big Stone Phone Company have been rather busy prepping for the App Store launch and they have just issued a press release formally announcing the three applications that will be available at launch on July 11th. According to the release…

Big Stone Phone is proud to announce the release of three brand new applications for the iPhone. All three applications make use of the iPhone’s built in camera, but with differing intentions – one app, TalkingPics, has many practical applications, while another, called iGraffiti, is just pure fun. The third application, Twittelator, is a full-featured Twitter client for the iPhone with the ability to send a map of the user’s location with one click and automatically upload snapshots to TwitPics.com.

The entire press release can be seen here.

For details and screen shots of the applications read on…

Want to write for What’s On iPhone?

The App Store launched TODAY and we are really excited!  After upgrading to the new firmware and beginning to download applications one thing is clear– it is better than we could possibly have imagined. The apps are numerous- especially for an initial launch. There are some absolutely excellent ones already. Many great ones are FREE! The App Store and the power of the iPhone will only grow from here.

Since we launched (just a few weeks ago), we have been steadily increasing our readership and have plans to expand the site already.  We’re looking for a few iPhone Addicts to join our cause.

So if you want to write about- Native Applications, Web Based Applications, and any iPhone news thats fit to blog, Contact Us with a sample of your writing at https://www.whatsoniphone.com/contact (or click the Contact button above)

We’re looking forward to hearing from you – and so is the rest of the world!

eBooks On An iPhone: An Interview with ZappTek’s Michael Zapp

By

On July 9, 2008

The holy grail of iPhone applications may just be the upcoming ebook readers that will be making their way to the device beginning this Friday. There have already been ebook readers available on jailbroken phones but the lack of available content has always be a hugely limiting factor. (Content is the huge advantage the Amazon Kindle currently has over other dedicated readers.)

The landscape for reading ebooks on handheld devices will change significantly in the coming months. Market leader eReader has announced the future release of an iPhone version of their software. In the meantime, however, there are an increasing number of choices. One that takes an unusual approach is Legends from ZappTek. We had a chance to interview Michael Zapp, the company’s founder.

Here is what he had to say…

Fairwell Dead Tree Editions… We’ll Miss You

By

The end of print media is coming and it will be here a whole lot sooner than we might expect.

The onslaught on its way from all sides.

With its slick interface, caching ability and ease of reading, the TimesReader (now available for both pc and mac) doesn’t help the dead tree edition’s cause one bit.

RSS readers are changing the way many of us consume the news and add-ons like Google Gears allow us to take our feeds "off-line" for reading anywhere, any time.

Then there are dedicated ebook readers like the SonyReader or Amazon Kindle. I know I’m not the norm, but I actually PREFER reading on such a device these days. I love having a large selection of reading material with me all the time. Add to that the fact that the Kindle is also a great device to get the news each morning and you begin to see the trend.

But all of these devices have nice big screens. How can something with a screen the size of an iPhone possibly contribute to the demise of printed media? (This is, after all, an iPhone site.)

The answer is simple- accessibility.

It’s The App Store… Stupid!

The initial round of reviews of the iPhone 3G are coming in and one thing is clear- as we have been saying all along THE HARDWARE ISN’T THE NEWS HERE THE APP STORE IS!

James Kendrick of JKOnTheRun put it quite well in a post earlier today

In the end, I believe that the App Store and the 2.0 firmware are the much bigger story here.
