As a guy who likes to feel nostalgic from time to time, one of my favorite activities is taking a sheet of notebook paper and making a paper football, but without a proper paper football table (which are found in school cafeterias across the country) or an opponent my dream is quickly dashed.  With this app, Paper Football, the days of being a lunchroom MVP are back.

Right from the start I was taken aback by the graphics.  You play in a cafeteria, complete with vending machines and trays of food in the background.

You have two different play modes, basic 1-on-1 or kick mode.  Kick mode is just a basic kick practice, while 1-on-1 is the true game.   You can either play the computer or another person, which is the best quality to the game.  You put the iPhone between you like it’s a table and play.

It takes a couple tries to get the motion of flicking the football back and forth which is nothing more then a finger swipe.  The real draw for any paper football gamer is kicking a field goal, which is done the same way as moving for a touchdown.

The game does have some issues.  It’s far too easy once you get the hang of it.  Some of the sound effects, like when you actually hit or kick the football, are weak and could be improved.  The lite version also only allows you to play for a couple minutes before sending you back to the home screen.  Though that seems to be the only difference.

Basic physics are also ignored.  If you flick the paper football right to the end of the table and its center of gravity is over the end it should fall off.  That doesn’t happen here.  All you need is the smallest piece to be touching and the paper football stays on the table for a score.

Overall this is a fun game for a nostalgia trip.  After wasting a little time the game gets old because it’s too easy, but the ability to play against someone is worth a download.

Quick Take

Value: Good for the free version, too much for the $4.99 full version.
Would I Buy Again: Yes, though for less then what the full version costs.
Learning Curve:  Low
Who is it for:  Anyone, those who want to relive high school study hall.
What I like: Graphics and nostalgic feeling
What I Don’t:  Too easy, game play, sound

Final Statement:  Descent for a short time but falls a little short.  Worth the lite version to give it a look and to show off.
