The folks at Day and Night Studios noticed, in one of my posts, that I am a preschool teacher, and asked if I would be interested in reviewing their latest preschool game.

I downloaded Peek-A-Boo barn and happily shared it with the students.  I teach children 3-6 years old so I was concerned they may be a bit too old.  However, I was very surprised to see them all wanting a turn to play.  They were very intrigued by the game and the iTouch

First the game opens with a barn on a hill and a happy sunshine rising.

Then you hear an animal sound from behind the barn door, and the child can begin to guess what animal it could be. After hearing the sound the barn door begins shaking, the child must  touch the doors to get them to open revealing a picture of the animal and hear its name announced.  In the English version a little girl announces the name of the animal, in the  Spanish version an adult announces it. The children at my center loved the "challenge" of guessing the animal and then seeing and hearing if they were correct.

The game continues until all animals have been exposed.  Then the sun sets and the animals go to sleep.  The game cycles on as long as the child interacts with it.

As my students are a little bit older I found they were much more interested in the Spanish version.  We teach the children Spanish everyday, so this was a good refresher for our little friends.  The children all loved it and have asked to play it again and again.  They have also begun asking for other games.  I have yet to find many  preschool games that are educational and appropriate to offer in a Preschool environment, this one is a WINNER.  All the teachers, parents and students LOVE Peek-A-Boo barn! The  illustrations in the game remind me of the story "The Big Red Barn" by Mary Wise Brown. A classic children’s story.

As an early childhood professional I think this is a wonderful cause and effect game with the added bonus of animal sound recognition.  This is a wonderful game to take along when your child is expected to sit, such as Dr’s appointments or long car rides.

I will admit even my 7 year old has been found playing it through a few times in both English and Spanish.

The children had one word to describe this game-COOOOOOOOL! and the staff here agree.

Younger children will love opening the barn doors to find a new animal animation, as they learn about cause and effect and become familiar with animal names and sounds. Older children will enjoy guessing animals by sound, then seeing the animal names, which helps develop early literacy skills. And everyone will adore the illustrations by Divya Srinivasan, whose work is regularly featured in the New Yorker.Peekaboo Barn was made for you and your toddler by artists and educators, not marketers, robots, or folks repackaging clip art.
