I love the apps that do one or two things well, and only cost a dollar or two. Unfortunately, the majority of these dollar apps usually don’t do that one or two things well. Every now and then, however, you find an application like People that’s worth every penny, especially since its totally Free.

On the surface, this application looks like it’s simply a portal to whitepages.com, but at a closer look it actually does much more. It does, indeed, allow you to search whitepages.com using the name, address, or phone number of an individual. It does this exceptionally well and that alone has value. It offers an optimized interface that is highly usable on the iPhone’s small screen, and it remembers recent searches. These are two of the areas that were of greatest critique when I reviewed the application One Seek the other day.

People is more than just a portal, it also makes fantastic use of the iPhone’s GPS and location feature. When you search using the “nearby” tab it tells you the names, phone numbers, and addresses of everyone in your general vicinity. After doing a few tests in my neighborhood, I found that some of the information was out of date, but only because the source from which it was drawing had not been updated yet (everything else was accurate and fast).

I can imagine using this application in a number of different scenarios. For instance, –Someone calls but does not leave a message and you want to know who it was before returning the phone call. This application will tell you.
–You are driving to visit a friend and you know you’re in their neighborhood but you can’t seem to find their house. This application will tell you if you’re in the right area or not, give you their address (so you can make sure that it’s accurate) and their phone number.
–You moved into a new home and you want to find out who’s in the neighborhood. This application will tell you.

People is an inexpensive way to get a tremendous amount of information when you need it. I recommend this application, even though I am a little spooked about the privacy issues that could potentially pop up.

Quick Take

Value:  High
Would I Buy Again:  Yes
Learning Curve: Low
Who is it for: Anyone with an iPhone who might need to locate people by name, address, telephone# or nearby
What I like:
Works well, well designed for easy use, does what it claims to an more
What I Don’t: Privacy is a huge issue that evven the developer tries to address by including this caveat-

Privacy: People only finds publicly listed information. Cell Phone numbers are not listed, so little information about them is available. Please visit WhitePages.com/privacy_central to find more information about removing your information from People and from other websites.

Final Statement: This is an exceptionally useful utility that is worth downloading to your iPhone and keeping there even if you don’t have to use it immediately. Somewhere along the line you’re going to want and need to locate someone either by their phone number or their proximity to you, and this application does that very well.

Read the Developer's Notes:
People is a White Pages application that allows you to quickly and easily find a full name, address, and phone number for almost anyone.

• Search over 180 million public listings (80% of US adults) using just the information you know- a name, partial address, or phone number.
• See a list of search results. Then, with one tap, call the person, view the address in the Maps application, or add the person to your contacts.
• Find people near your current location automatically.

Privacy: People only finds publicly listed information. Cell Phone numbers are not listed, so little information about them is available. Please visit WhitePages.com/privacy_central to find more information about removing your information from People and from other websites.
