This is one of a set of reviews for the Piccolo brand of children’s picture books out of the Dutch publishing house Unieboek | Het Spectrum. The books are offered in multiple languages including English, Dutch, French, German and Spanish.
I really have to go! is about a boy named Brian who is being picked up from school having to take a pee. As his father perform various chores and encounters difficulties, Brian still has to pee. Hilarity ensues.
The book has three modes. The first is reading, which is silent and allows the user to flip through the pages. The second is listening, in which the user flips through the pages but on each page a voice narrates the text. The final mode is learning to read, in which the text is highlighted as the narrator speaks the words.
The digital book uses many background sound effects to add to the book’s atmosphere. Arrows appear on the top to turn the page either way and the page does a "flip" effect to move to another. You can also swipe your finger on the page to view an elongated picture or to flip the page.
This book actually was easier to navigate than the others, however the program kept crashing when I kept reaching a certain page (but I have already heard from the developer that there is a fix for that waiting for approval). Otherwise, the pictures are very colorful and the app is quite easy to use.

Piccolo apps are a sensible and entertaining alternative to movies and games. At home or on-the-go – always a picture book on hand. De story is told using the pictures and text from the book, adding sounds and interactive elements.

‘I have to pee,’ says Bram, just as they have gotten on the bike. ‘Can you hold it in for just a little while?’ asks dad. ‘I have to buy some bread.’ ‘Just a moment then, but I really have to go,’ says Brian. It turns out it is not that easy to find a toilet. And Bram really has to go!
