Well, if you’re like me, texting has become an integral part of your everyday life and of course it costs money–doesn’t everything?  Now, a new App called Ping from Gary Fung–which only works with the iPhone and iPod touch–puts an interesting spin on texting.

So, here’s how Ping works.  Open the Ping App for the first time and it prompts you to pick a user name.  Make sure you like your name and people will know it’s you because you cannot change it once you create it.  After you create your user name, email your friends right from Ping to tell them to get this new App for their iPhone or iPod touch so they, too, can start texting for free.  Make sure they send you their user names, too.  Next, choose, in settings, how you want to receive your notifications–via sound, vibration or both.

Now you’re ready to start texting your friends.  Put in the person you want to contact and you are good to go.  Even if your iPhone is sleeping, Ping uses push notification to alert you to a new message.  One thing to note–when texting an iPod touch the alert works only if Ping is open or the iPod touch is charging.  Otherwise, when you wake the iPod touch from sleeping, the text will pop-up on your screen.  

The texts are free and it works all over the world–very impressive. Right now, Ping is free in the app store, so get it today!
