User Rating:Recently, my PC died (Mac lovers can feel free to say "I told you so") and required some time in the shop for repairs. Fortunately, I keep a Mac Mini as a back-up computer. However, I discovered that the webcam for my PC didn’t work with the Mac Mini. I didn’t want to buy a separate webcam when I would be returning to my PC when the repairs were done.
Then I learned of PocketCam, and decided to give it a shot. There is a PocketCam Lite for free if you feel like only transmitting in monochrome. However, I had some iTunes credit available and splurged on the full version. Both versions require the installation of some free software available on Senstic’s website on the target computer.
Despite the fact it worked with Skype, I wouldn’t call it a replacement for my old webcam. Image transmission was delayed up to a minute (despite being on the same network) and video was choppy. The app does work with audio but I decided to stick with the dedicated microphone I already owned (which thankfully did work with the Mac).
I am ambivalent about this program. On one hand, it did save me a trip to the local Apple Store for a new webcam. On the other hand, it’s kind of a pain to set up. I suspect video would be more smooth if Apple permitted the use of it’s USB connector with third-party programs. But, hey, it’s Apple.
If you need a cheap alternative to a webcam and already have an iPhone or iPod touch, then PocketCam could work for you.
Quick Take
Value:Medium to High
Would I Buy Again:Under the right circumstances, yes.
Learning Curve:Low
Who Is It For:Those who don't wish to buy a dedicated webcam
What I Like:Does exactly what it says it does.
What I Don't Like:Delay and choppiness in video transmission. Price.
Final Statement:It's a good cheap alternative to a webcam, but not a replacement.
