User Rating:Movie tie-ins are common in the video game realm. Hardly any action movie can make it through without some game studio whipping out a normally mediocre adventure that roughly related to the movie’s plot. The iPhone has not missed out on this marketing tactic with movies like The Karate Kid, and Avatar. Prince of Persia is a little different since it began as a video game and is now being made into a movie. I couldn’t be more pleased that instead of creating a new game for the movie, Ubisoft has brought us a real classic with the release of Prince of Persia for the iPhone.
Straight from the glory days of 1989, this is the original classic that started the Prince of Persia franchise. This side scrolling platformer eschews the fast paced action common in its genre for a more calculating approach. Seasoned players will be able to run through levels, but the best advice when playing for the first time to take your time. On the other hand, don’t take too much time because the you have one hour to save the princess in this game. The iPhone version takes pity of those that don’t have the luxury of playing games of their iPhones for hours at a time. You can select any level right from the beginning so you can work at your own pace or even return to practice particularly fun levels. The graphics for this game have been updated with beautiful detail and the sounds are have a great classic style to them. The controls are directional arrows split across the screen with tapping anywhere to use the action button. Those unfamiliar with the original may have a few issues learning all the controls since a lot of actions are performed with holding the action button down while pushing directional keys.
The detail that went into this port really shows and it is sure to be a favorite of veterans and newcomers to the series. I would like to see state saving at some point and the ability to continue later with the health upgrades you have acquired. As it stands now if you leave the game, you can start from the beginning or choose a level but you start that level with the original three life points. This can make levels like the final one difficult.
Despite this, Prince of Persia is a fantastic port of a classic game than ages very well.
