For most people their smart phone is their primary camera when it comes to shooting daily life. With a high quality camera on the back of the iPhone, casual shooters can capture their precious moments even faster. While the stock camera app is functional and will get the job done. It leaves much to be desired from those that are use to using the higher end cameras. Pro Camera aims to fill that void, offering an impressive array of tools for the pro and amateur cameraman alike.

Right off the bat you can tell that this app is for people that use the iPhone camera everyday. The responsiveness of the shooting is amazing compared to the standard app. One of the nicest features is that the entire screen to act a trigger for taking the shot. This is especially helpful when holding the phone in an awkward position. I am sure they will add the use of the volume buttons as triggers once iOS 5 is released. Pro Camera offers an array of guides to help you level and frame your shot, and it also has an auto-stabilizer which will wait until the phone is as still as possible before capture. This is great for slower subjects like portraits. On the other end of the spectrum, there is a low resolution mode that allows for “burst shooting” when the action is too fast to take time setting up a shot. An auto timer and individual focus and exposure settings make this app indispensable even if you are just a causal shooter.

Once you have finished a shoot, you can then use Pro Camera’s editing tools to crop, rotate, and edit color. There are also a series of filters to add a quick effect. The entire app’s interface is snappy and the various sections appear quickly, which is important when you need to make a quick change while you are photographing. Pro Camera is one of many apps that expand the features of the iPhone’s camera, but it’s polish and the sheer number of tools available help set it apart from the competition. I recommend you add this to your dock and put that old Camera.app in some folder near the back.

We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars
