I am a big fan of the Rayman series. The last time I played Rayman 2, I made it all the way to the end of the game in 32 hours, so you can imagine my excitement when I heard this was coming to the iPhone.
Rayman 2 for the iPhone is a very good port, and is similar to the original in many ways, Rayman even does his ‘I’m bored waiting for you to move’ sequence if you leave him alone for too long.
The gameplay is smooth and the animations are crisp and clean. The colors are vivid, bright and even look great on the small screen.
Rayman is controlled by a virtual joystick on the left corner which moves Rayman around, and the right side provides the jump and shoot buttons. You can also look around the screens by simply grabbing the screen and rotating it to look around. You will need to do this often if you want to see everything in the Rayman world including all those hidden lums he collects.
The scenery is wonderful, the waterfalls, deep sea caves, and pirate hideouts have all been rendered beautifully on the iPhone and the music is always providing the right mood in the right environment. It just makes gameplay that much more fun.
The basic game is the same as you free all of Rayman’s friends and gain more magic powers to defeat the pirates.
What I loved about the original game is all the different experiences that you can have with Rayman. He can climb, swim, run, jump, water ski, and even fly. There is a challenge towards the end of the game where you fly Rayman through a large room trying to avoid various obstacles and navigate through tight spaces without crashing. It was rough and took me over an hour to finally conquer..
This is a very challenging game, and one that definitely brings back all of the fun and excitement of the original version. Having it portable on the iPhone makes all that more enjoyable. My only complaint is that the load time for some of the sequences could be annoying, I wish there were a way for me to tell the game not to load the mini story lines and save that time.
Other than that, I highly recommend this game, its definitely worth the $6.99!
Value:$6.99 was a little pricey, but this is worth every penny.
Would I Buy Again:Absolutely.
Learning Curve:Took a few minutes to master the controls
Who Is It For:Anyone who loves 3D adventure type games
What I Like:The graphics, creative worlds, and gameplay
What I Don't Like:Load Time.
Final Statement:This is an excellent port of the original, worth looking at for sure.
