Real Racing GTI is the free version of a more sophisticated app called Real Racing (which I suppose beats calling it "Real Racing Free"). It’s a very good racing app on its own, and the paid version has more car choices, tracks, and game modes (along with a cost of $6.99).
Even more interesting is that the app is sponsored by Volkswagen. I can only postulate that VW also sponsors the paid version, and I hate it when the paid version of an app has ads.
However, corporate sponsorship has its privileges. The graphics of this app are among the best I’ve seen on the iPhone or iPod Touch. They’re rendered in beautiful 3-D and the motion is superb.
The game controls work pretty simply. You tilt the device to steer right or left and touch the screen to brake. If you tap the screen once, you get the rear view of the car. If there is a way to pause a game, I haven’t found it. But that’s a minor complaint.
The app has a "showroom" which is mostly for pushing VW’s 2010 GTI. It’s also possible to see career stats for your car. One thing the app doesn’t support is the ability to have a multi-player game. That requires the full version. For this, there is simply a Winner’s Circle for best time around the track.
Overall a fun app and certainly the best racing game I’ve seen so far on the iPhone or iPod Touch. At this price, I can do nothing but recommend this download if you haven’t done so already.
