I’ve tried a number of the "iPhone as mouse" apps for the Mac. They worked but were because they were remarkably inaccurate often more trouble than they were worth. In short… they were all Cool concept … mediocre execution.

Since I use my Macs 95% of the times these days I wasn’t all that interested in trying out Air Mouse which currently only works with Windows. (Mac compatibility of is coming according to the developer.)

So many people had expressed interest in Air Mouse that I just had t check it out. What do I think? WOW!!! Air Mouse actually works. No, let me correct that. WOW!! Air Mouse works incredibly well.

Set up was a breeze.

Load the app on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Download the server application from : https://rpatechnology.com/airmouse and run it on your Windows PC.  Set the IP Address and Port numbers on the server application. The server Application also allows you to set the Pointer Speed, Acceleration and Scrolling speed and you are good to go.

The Air Mouse works well as a touchpad. It really does. And with a bit of adjustment it works even better. The iPhone’s keyboard is always visible and works fantastically well as a mini-keyboard for your PC. Nice!!! Clearly worth the price for that.

The cool thing, though, is that the Air Mouse is an… AIR MOUSE. With the tap of a button on the iPhone or iPod Touch while it is running Air Mouse, the device becomes a motion sensing air mouse like those from major accessory companies like Logitech. It REALLY WORKS!!!

Here is the final “WOW!“ with Air Mouse.

My only remaining Windows device is not a PC or a notebook, it is a slate tabletpc. (And the only reason I still have it is that Apple still won’t create (release???) a tablet of their own any larger than the iPhone.) Slate tablets lack a mouse. Slate tablets lack a keyboard. It is part of the draw for me but is the reason slates and the first UMPCs (UltraMobilePCs) were panned by many.

With my iPhone or iPod Touch my slate now has both a keyboard AND a mouse. That is fantastic and is one of the reasons Air Mouse is, in my opinion, a home run.

I can’t wait for it to work with my Macs too!

Rating of 4 for now, 4.5 or 5 when the Mac version is available.

Quick Take

Value:  Very high
Would I Buy Again: In a second
Learning Curve: Medium
Who is it for:  Anyone who wants to use their iPhone/Touch as a mouse
What I like:  Work well as a mouse, works a well as a keyboard, works well as an air mouse
What I Don’t: After using it for a few hours… nothing comes to mind

Final Statement:   This is the best ”iPhone as mouse” app yet. It works well and is well priced.
