The original Dungeon Hunter provided iPhone gamers with a good fix of dungeon-crawling action. Choosing between the usual classes of Mage, Rogue and Warrior, players would explore the world of Gothicus; questing, looting, and slaughtering just about anything that moves.

The plot hardly screams ‘originality’ as the player takes control of some form of ‘Chosen One’ who must rid Gothicus of its tyrannical ruler, who also happens to be the player’s brother. Let’s not be too fussy though, you’re never going to get overly immersed in a game world that’s stuck on a 4-inch screen anyway.  Likewise, the side-quests in the game are your usual ‘kill-a-certain-amount-of-rats/bats/goblins’ fare, for which you usually receive a menial amount of XP. So plot-wise, much of the game feels fairly trivial, but that doesn’t stop it from being a hell of a lot of fun to play.

Dungeon Hunter 2 plays much like the original. You move your character around the screen using the virtual stick, and tap the macro buttons in the bottom right corner of the screen to activate spells and abilities. Unless you pick the Warrior – a primitive brute who just hacks-and-slashes his way through the game – there is some strategy involved in the gameplay, and you’ll soon find yourself chaining abilities together to great effect. A wealth of lootable items, plenty of abilities, and the option to pick a sub-class for your character at Level 12 round off a satisfying levelling and combat system.

Dungeon Hunter 2 is pretty free-roaming as iPhone RPGs go, giving the player plenty of environments to traverse. The game’s title- which conjures up images of running through endless poorly lit corridors and caves slaughtering every spider and rat that happens to reside there – doesn’t do it justice.  Thick forests, snow-covered tundra and desert wastelands are just some of the pretty new environments you’ll be exploring throughout this vast game, meaning that you won’t suffer from visual boredom too quickly.

As is becoming the norm for anything developed by Gameloft, Dungeon Hunter 2 is an impressive game that could easily demand a higher price tag. It’s prettier, more expansive, and deeper than the original, making it by far and away the best RPG for the iPhone. The plot and side-questing are utterly cliched, but you soon won’t care about that as you’ll have too much fun slashing and spell-casting your way through the evil denizens of Gothicus.
