When I first played this game I was greatly disappointed.  The more I looked into it the more I realized it was not really a game, but an experiment in using the accelerometor in a new way.  R.I.P. is based on the virtual reality games that were popular in the early 90s.  You use your iPhone as your "eyes" to look around the environment.  The whole idea is that you are a ghost looking for your grave.  Once you find it you can rest in peace.  The gameplay is not very entertaining and took me an average of about 25-30 seconds to reach the goal.  The redeaming quality of the game is the use of the accelerometer.

The iPhone acts as a window into the graveyard of R.I.P.  While holding your phone in portrait mode, you are able to look up and down.  It reacts very similar to a virtual reality view.  To look to the side, you turn the phone to landscape mode.  This will change the view to the side where you are again able to look up and down.  This interface is very unique to any other application I have seen on this platform.  It is true first person as you can look around the entire 3-D environment.  There is a red arrow in the direction you need to move to find the grave.  You move the ghost by pressing the red arrow.  Again, there is really no gameplay to this.  You simply follow the arrow and the game is over.  There are no obstacles or enemies.

I am giving this app 3 stars simply because the execution of creating a simply unique game engine is there.  I see this as more of a concept than a game, so unless you are curious to test out the virtual reality type controls, I would save my $.99.  What I really hope for is to see these controls and proof of concept be utilized to create a real game.  This could be great for a first person shooter similar to Doom or Wolfenstein.  Keep a look out on better uses of this technology as it could create a very interesting 3-D gaming environment.  Until those apps come out, I say wait.

Quick Take:  Interesting concept.  Poor design of a game.

Value:  Low   (potential for the technology)

Would I buy again?  No

Learning Curve:  None

Who is it for?  Anyone interested in iPhone virtual reality concept.

What I like:  The unique use of the accelerometer.

What I don’t like:  The game.

Final Statement:  If this was free it would be worth taking a look at the interface.  I do not recommend spending money on the app.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Media reaction so far:" ...the method of interaction is superbly unique. "" ...a bit of technical innovation is needed to make a new game stand out. And that's where Quinn Genzel's new app R.I.P. really shines. "" A fascinating twist on the old virtual reality concept and one that - now we've actually seen it - seems like an obvious use of the iPhone's unique motion sensing system. "- Pocket Gamer" The innovation comes from the way you look around the 3D environment "- iPhone Games NetworkThis game uses a unique, revolutionary means of control and play specially designed for the iPhone. It's like total 3D immersion virtual reality, but without the helmet or googles. The iPhone is used as a viewfinder into a virtual world that wraps completely around you. Aiming the phone downward shows you a virtual'ground', while upward shows you'tree tops'and'sky'. Tilting the iPhone 90 degrees left or right shows you a corresponding view to the right or left of your ghost in the graveyard. From there, you can also look up and down (but in landscape mode). Gravity in this virtual world corresponds with that in the real world. See for yourself just what the iPhone is capable of!R.I.P. is a 3D first-person simulation that casts you as a ghost lost in a cemetery. The goal is the same as its title: R.I.P. -- Rest In Peace. All you have to do is find your own grave, marked" R.I.P. ", so that you can finally Rest In Peace. Are you up for the challenge?
