User Rating:One of the original great iPhone games has finally received a retina display update.
The game is Rolando. In this incredible game, you control little groups of rolling, meatball looking characters called rolandos with the accelerometer and guide them to the exit while avoiding spikes, shadows, and toxins. You do not have to save every single rolando; there is a rolando requirement in each level, but if this requirement is met, you are fine (as long as the royal rolandos are saved, these must be saved).
When guiding the rolandos to the finish, keep an eye out for diamonds, which are bonuses. Completing the level with extra time will also provide you with bonus points, though this becomes quite a task in later levels. The final bonus: rescuing all rolandos of the level of course.
For being a simple iPhone game, this game does have its share of challenges, including challenges that should not be there. Your rolandos may become stuck somewhere and you can either try to rescue them or restart the level. Usually, after several tries, they can be rescued.
One other quirk about this game is its lack of the multitouch that we all know. Yes, there is the ability to pan around the level with two fingers. Selecting two rolandos simultaneously with multitouch? Nope, only one will be selected. You must drag to select more than one. Throughout the game there are also yellow platforms which can be manipulated with the touch of the finger. Whenever these platforms are in motion, the rolandos cannot roll. This may be a feature to prevent rolling off of the platform, but in several instances it is very bothersome.
There are four worlds in this game; these four worlds provide a lot of gameplay and the game does take a while to complete. It’s a great value. As for content updates: these are doubtful. The game was not updated for over a year. No bug fixes, absolutely no updates since September of 2009. Now that it has been updated, updates may again be a possibility.
The game is 99¢ right now. Seriously, go buy it. If/when the price goes up, it will still be worth any price the developers put on it. It is that good.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:Most definitely.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Any casual gamer.
What I Like:Lots of content. Unique animation style and great, challenging gameplay.
What I Don't Like:No multitouch or Game Center. The game could become abandoned again.
Final Statement:The iPhone game of yesterday is just as great today.
