A lot of classic games have a tendency to make their way to the App Store usually using high-end graphics to add some pizzazz. Rubik’s Cube is another example of this sort of app. This actually isn’t the first Rubik’s Cube app in the App Store, but it’s the first official one licensed by the creator.
The app allows for a myriad of ways to play the game. You can play it with or without a timer. There are lessons on how to solve the cube (if you understand the basic algorithm, then solving it becomes easy). You can also alter the dimensions of each side so it’s two-by-two, four-by-four (also known as Rubik’s Revenge), or the classic three-by-three. You can even alter the sides to have pictures rather than simply colors.
One other interesting feature of the game is the ability to snap photos of physical Rubik’s Cubes and having the game able to then instruct you on how to solve them.
This is one of the best implementations of Rubik’s Cube I have seen in the App Store, and I have worked with quite a few of them. Virtually every aspect of the game is customizable including the background and the app has my favorite feature of being able to play the iTunes library in the background.
The only reason I take off a half-star is the price. I managed to get the game at $.99 and that’s the price I would heartily recommend it at. However, if you’re a Rubik’s Cube enthusiast, this is the iPhone version of it you must have even if you pay three bucks to get it.
