Granted, this app has been out for a little while, but I’m a long time reader of Sci Fi Wire (despite its parent company’s name change to SyFy) and was interested in taking a look at how the news page translated to the App Store.
The answer is: pretty well. It’s a simple app with a good interface. As with most free apps, it makes its money by having a banner advertisement on the screen (in my case it was a promotion of NBC Sports, NBC Universal being the parent company of SyFy).
Keep in mind that this isn’t CNN. News isn’t updated that often and usually there is no news on the weekends. If you want speciality news geared towards sci fi fans, then this is for you. If you need the news constantly updated, look elsewhere.
The app is divided into three tabs: latest news, sections, and videos. The latest news is obvious. Sections include animation, conventions, games and all sorts of other topics that are of interest to their target audience. The final section is video which are science fiction-related news clips.
The videos launch the external video application to watch them. This is truly a bare-bones application with no attention-grabbing extras whatsoever.
Since it’s basically a news feed, the app does not take up that much room on the iPhone or iPod Touch. That combined with its price (which would be zero, as in free) makes it worth downloading if you have any sort of interest in sci fi news.
Pros: Simple interface. Interesting news if you like sci fi.
Cons: Doesn’t do much beyond news feed. I expected more from SyFy.
