User Rating:I have never been a scrapbooking person. I don’t own any rubber stamp, I don’t have any idea what vellum is, and I am absolutely sure I have never used scallop cut scissors. Scrapbooking has an entire culture and style all its own from the spirally binding to the crooked photo placement. So you can imagine that I was a little excited to review iWikiPhone’s Scrappbook app. This is the kind of scrapbooking I can get into. No paper bits all over the floor and no paste on my shirt. My first Scrapbook is just one app download away.
To summarize, Scrappbook lets you turn all of the media you create with your iPhone (photos, audio, and video) into miniature scrapbooks. These books are created in a very similar fashion to photo books in iPhoto. The advantage of Scrappbook lies in its ability to gather your media while you are on the go instead of waiting until you get home or to the hotel. You can be out adventuring and create high quality media collections right from your iPhone. Scrappbook not only themes your photos and videos with one of five high quality themes, but can also imbed its geolocation with an interactive map of where the photo or video was taken. Audio can be added on top of photos and clicked to hear a message. Add to that text bubbles, banners, and signs, and you can create great looking scrapbooks in minutes. Scrappbook keeps all of your creations archived in the app and they can be edited at any time.
A great scrappbook isn’t worth much if you can’t share it, and Scrappbook has you covered with sharing via email and Facebook. With email Scrappbook exports your book as a PDF. This works well and looks great on both a iPhone as well as a desktop. One shortcoming to this method is that the audio and video are stripped out of the scrapbook. This may not be a limitation of the PDF but I would love to see the audio and video embedded in the PDF if this is possible. The Facebook sharing option also had its bit of rockiness. It took several tries to get Facebook to authorize Scrappbook, but once I made it through it was a breeze to share on my wall. In this case Scrappbook creates a photo gallery with each page being one photo. Once again the audio and video is left behind. This is a real shame, since this relegates the full presentation of your scrapbook to the iPhone and the scrapbooks lose that extra interaction that give digital scrapbooks an edge over traditional paper versions. It should also be noted that the app can not use geolocation information from a photo or video that you took earlier. This may be a limitation of the iPhone API, or this way have simply been an oversight of the developers, but I would venture to say this would be a helpful feature to add in an update. We can’t always have the app open to take pictures in order to capture the geolocation data.
These few limitations aside, This app makes it easy to create photo presentations utilizing the features and the "always at hand" nature of the iPhone. I think that as iWikiPhone continues to support and add features / themes to this application they will find a strong following within a niche of people that may not want to spend time with a more professional application. The greatest strength this app has is its low price compared to the quality of what is offered. I would recommend you pick this app up next time you plan that weekend getaway.
