User Rating:As an attempted screenwriter, I really wanted to like Scripts Pro more than I actually did. It could be that I’m used to the more intuitive interface of Final Draft. However, before I go into the negatives, let me highlight the positives.
The app is universal. It’s easier to write a screenplay on the iPad rather than the iPhone, but the iPhone is more portable. It’s nice to have both options available in a single app.
The interface is simple. Scripts can be exported via either e-mail or iTunes and can be saved in two of the major formats for scripts (.CELTX and .FDX, the latter being the Final Draft format). There’s a nice preview feature for the script and some nice pop-ups for scene separation. The program also keeps track of scene locations and characters for later use.
Here’s my beef with the app: it’s not intuitive enough. Several other apps have buttons that one can tap to determine if they’re using a scene header, character, parenthetical, etc. In this program, you have to rely on the Tab key and the program’s intuition. I prefer more control over my process than that. Also, at $6 it’s slightly more expensive than other options. On the other hand, it’s a lot cheaper than the $200 Final Draft for Mac.
In short, while there are features and capabilities that are worth putting on an iPad, the program still isn’t quite up to the level of a full-featured screenwriting program. If you’re serious, use Final Draft. If you’re either not serious or need a secondary program to write scene ideas, Scripts Pro is a good alternative.
Quick Take
Value:Medium.
Would I Buy Again:Possibly.
Learning Curve:Low to Medium.
Who Is It For:Screenwriting amateurs or those who want to write on the go.
What I Like:Simple to use. Nice feature set.
What I Don't Like:Not as intuitve as I'd prefer.
Final Statement:If you're just starting out or on the go, use Scripts Pro.
Me neither, but you can write it with
SCRIPTS PRO!
----------------------------------------------
When writing in desktop screenplay programs, you forget about the program all together and are focused entirely on writing your story. The same thing is true with Scripts Pro because there is no cluttered interface or complex solutions to writing. With Scripts Pro you can write your ideas in screenplay format whether you're on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. Fast element switching using the TAB button, suggestion pop-ups for character names, as well as scene re-ordering, character renaming and more. CELTX and FINAL DRAFT 8 support is included! Since Scripts Pro comes as a package, it will run on both the iPad AND iPhone. No need to purchase two separate versions.
*Please note: Final Draft 7 .TXT support will appear in a future update. Thankyou.*
