App Update (Kind Of…) – Evernote

By

On December 11, 2008

Okay, the Evernote fan-boy is at it again… but this is really great…

Tired of having to either plug my camera into a usb port or remove the sd card in order to transfer photos to my Mac, I bought a 2GB Eye-Fi card some months ago. If you aren’t familiar with Eye Fi you should be since, as silly as a WiFi-enabled sd card might sound at first, once you start using it you’ll never go back.

The Eye Fi card makes it possible to wirelessly trasfer images to your computer or an online service. That means that as you take pictures they are automatically transfered and backed up (so long as a wireless connection is present and configured). It works quite well.

Now Evernote and Eye-Fi have teamed up. As they explain it…

With an Eye-Fi SD card, your digital camera gains the ability to send photos over Wi-Fi directly into your Evernote account. Simply snap a photo and, like magic, it wirelessly goes into Evernote. Begin using your digital camera in entirely new ways: take snapshots of whiteboards, business cards, receipts, even wine labels, and get great recognition results in Evernote.

I just configured my Eye Fi service to upload to Evernote and it works seamlessly. I took a number of images for an upcoming review and, within seconds, the images were in my Evernote account.

So what does this have to do with iPhones?

Alarm Clocks – Which One Should You Use?

By

On November 29, 2008

The minute I first got a cell phone ages ago and noticed the large clock in the center of the screen, I abandoned the concept of ever wearing wristwatches ever again.  Since I need to carry around a cell phone anyway which clearly displayed the time, it meant only one thing to forget rather than two (of course, that also means that if you lose one, you lose both).  Taking that idea to the iPhone and/or the iPod Touch, there are a myriad of clock applications available that are either free or cheap (the most expensive I found was 99 cents).

Weekend Updates…

By

On November 15, 2008

I love seeing new apps appear in the App Store. Sure, I only have an interest in a small percentage of the ones that appear daily, but every now and then there is a new app that makes me go "Wow!"

As much fun at that is, though, what is even more fun these days is seeing my favorite apps get incremental updates that add new features, increase speed and stability and, little by little, make my iPhone an even more powerful device.

Things had been quiet on both fronts lately but in the last day or so a number of my favorites received updates yet again. While none of them are earth shattering, it is nice to see good apps getting even better.

Among the recent updates…

App Update: TextGuru

By

On September 28, 2008

The options for creating and editing text on the iPhone and iPod Touch continue to grow and improve. Since July 11th many apps have added the option to create and edit text with the iPhone held in landscape. This is a significant improvement since it means a far larger keyboard. I find that I am able to type faster and with greater accuracy this way than with the iPhone held in portrait.

My favorite text editor has recently been WriteRoom. A simple (not rich-text) writing app, WriteRoom allowed for landscape typing and offered distraction-free typing on a simple screen with a black background and white text. For me, however, WriteRoom has just been surpassed by TextGuru.

App Update – Remote

By

On September 16, 2008

Apple’s amazing Remote app got updated today.

The update allows it to not only work seemlessly with iTunes 8.0 but also brings the new Genius Playlists to the free application.

Version 1.1 of Remote allows you to not only access Genius playlists but create them too. You can also create and edit playlists in iTunes.

Remote works beautifully with both iPhone and iPod Touch, and with iTunes on Mac and Apple TV, allowing you to choose media, playlists, search songs, artists and albums and even shows cover art.

The best thing about Remote?? I can put all those limited white Apple Remotes I’ve collected in the drawer.

Get It Here In The App Store.
