I love Google’s new search application. It is nothing short of awesome to be able to bring the phone to your ear, say a few words, and have the search completed almost immediately.  That noted, I still am interested when I see a new application come out that takes a different approach to searching the net.  That’s the case with this application.  No, it doesn’t do voice, you actually have to type something in.  But it does do something that the google application doesn’t-  Coverflow!  (And not in a gimmicky sort of way- it really adds something useful to search.)

The developer notes that they designed the application in such a way as to speed up the download of various webpages when you do a search. It does just that.  Instead of seeing a textual listing of search results and then tapping one of them to begin the download process to open up the webpage, the actual search results are offered in the form of the webpage itself and the various webpages can be quickly viewed coverflow-style.  When you want to get more detail and actually look at one of the results, all you need to do is use your fingers to enlarge the page and read what’s there.  If, you actually want to open up the page, and you want to actively interact with it, you can always double tap it to open the page in Safari.  When using the application for a while, however, it’s surprising to find out how often you actually don’t need to interact with the page but simply want to see what’s there.

In the configuration area under settings, you can determine whether or not you want to have safe search on, whether or not you want the application to remember your last search, whether or not you want spelling suggestions, and finally whether or not you want the auto correction feature to kick in.

It’s unfortunate for the developer that they released the application at just about the time that Google released a new version of their search application. Had this been just two weeks ago I would be incredibly drawn to this application and would likely choose it as my main means of searching. Having the pages presented in color flow and then being able to zoom in to see the actual page using multi-touch is that cool.  Unfortunately, two weeks later, Google has released their application and, at least on the iPhone, nothing can come close to it.  Ideally, I’d like to see Google incorporate this approach into the next version of the application.  That would be something.

Quick Take
What I like — really cool interface that makes searches a lot more fun.
What I don’t — nothing, but it would be great if this were incorporated into Google.
Would I buy again?  — sure, it’s really interesting to see what’s possible.
Learning curve — 0

Final Statement: It’s about a week too late.
