iOS is based on simplicity. Some apps are too simple. Others, such as Simplenote, are absolutely perfect.

Simplenote does one thing: it takes notes without any fuss. The app has very few settings; there is no unnecessary clutter. There are settings for the number of preview lines, font size, sort order, and lock orientation. That’s about it.

Notes can be created with the familiar plus in the top right corner of the screen. The first line will be used as the title of the note, similar to Apple’s Notes app. But this app is about replacing Apple’s stock app, not replicating it. The newly created note will then sync to Codality’s cloud, allowing it to be accessed and edited by the iPad variant of the app (it’s a universal app) or via SimplenoteApp.com.

Since I’ve had this app, I have yet to think about the stock Notes app again; cross-device syncing and guaranteed backup is just too valuable. Granted, you will have to deal with non-invasive ads (the pretty kind from Fusion if it’s any consolation) unless you pay a one time upgrade fee of $4.99. There’s also a premium option which is $11.99 a year for more backup versions of each note (30 versus the default 10), the option to create notes by email, and an RSS feed of your notes.

Simplenote won’t be for everybody, but if you think you’re fine with Apple’s Notes it’s time to upgrade.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:The people who take simple little notes.

What I Like:Simplicity. Syncing. Universal support. Trash bin for deleted note retrieval. It's free.

What I Don't Like:Rarely there are duplicate notes after reinstalling the app.

Final Statement:One thing I no longer search the App Store for: a note taking app.

Read the Developer's Notes:
People are using Simplenote to keep notes, lists, ideas and more. Your notes automatically synchronize with your computer and all your devices. It's extremely easy to use. For those who want more power, you can also use tags, pins, versions, and sharing.

The best way to learn about Simplenote is to try it. After you download it, you'll be asked to create an account. This allows your notes to synchronize with your computer.

After you sign up, try creating some notes! Then use your computer to sign in at simplenoteapp.com. All your notes appear there, too. Changes you make will synchronize back and forth automatically.

You can also use Simplenote with other devices. Check out our Downloads page for a complete list of products that work with Simplenote.

The free version of Simplenote slides a small, high quality ad to the top of your note list. If you like Simplenote, but you don't like ads, you can upgrade with a one-time purchase, or subscribe to Simplenote Premium. Going Premium also gives you some extra goodies.
